De Brit Sam Sunderland heeft deze ochtend voor de tweede keer in zijn loopbaan de Dakar Rally gewonnen. Het is de eerste overwinning voor het Spaanse merk GasGas dat al enkele jaren onder de vleugels van KTM valt.
Sunderland moest vandaag als tweede starten en verloor weinig tijd. Pablo Quintanilla, de tweede in het klassement, ging vol in de aanval en reed ook de snelste tijd. De Chileen kwam echter tekort om Sunderland nog te grazen te nemen. Quintanilla werd in zijn eerste Dakar voor Honda wel tweede in de eindstand.
Na Quintanilla eindigde Brabec op de tweede plaats in de laatste proef, Toby Price werd derde voor de andere twee Honda’s van Jose Ignacio Cornejo en Joan Barreda. Mason Klein sloot een ijzersterk debuut af op de zesde plaats, Luciano Benavides werd zevende voor Matthias Walkner en Sunderland. Lorenzo Santolino maakte de top-tien compleet.
Onze laaglanders deden het weer prima in de laatste rit. Jérôme Martiny finishte de etappe als 35ste. Noorderbuur Wiljan van Wikselaar kwam 37ste binnen. In de eindstand kan Martiny zijn 31ste plaats behouden en dat is een erg puike prestatie. Deze Dakar Rally was er eentje waar de nadruk op de navigatie lag. Telkens een rijder aan de kop van het klassement als eerste een stage moest aanvatten werden er navigatiefouten gemaakt. Zo werd het een strategisch spel waarbij het zaak was om de koppositie in het klassement aan een concurrent te gunnen en op de cruciale momenten toe te slaan.
