Wie afgelopen maanden in de paddock vertoefde hoorde het gerucht alvast. Een gerucht dat tijdens de Grand Prix van Glen Helen enkel sterker werd. Een gerucht dat vertelde de meest prestigieuze motorcrosswedstrijd, de Motocross Of Nations, in 2017 niet zoals oorspronkelijk gepland zou doorgaan in Glen Helen. Waar Glen Helen bij een Amerikaanse Motorcross wedstrijd al niet meteen de meest populaire van al de wedstrijden is. Moest organisator Bud Felkamp tijdens de vorige USGP wedstrijden in Glen Helen steeds vaststellen dat de Amerikanen het MXGP niet wilden proeven. Zelfs de laatste twee jaren bleven de fans, ondanks deelname van o.a. Cooper Webb (2015) en Eli Tomac (2016), stoïcijns bij de MXGP wedstrijd op het parcours van Glen Helen.
In onderling overleg tussen organisator, Bud Felkamp, en MXGP Promotor, Youthstream is dan ook besloten om de MXON van 2017 niet te organiseren in Glen Helen. Dit vanwege o.a. de financiële risico’s die zo’n grote wedstrijd met zich meebrengt, en die met zo’n beperkte interesse vanuit de Zuid Californische motorwereld niet meer berekend te noemen is. Wie deze wel zal mogen organiseren is op heden nog niet bekend gemaakt en of de wedstrijd in Amerika blijft is eveneens onduidelijk.

MONACO (Principality of Monaco), 27 September 2016 – Mr Giuseppe Luongo, Youthstream President, and Mr Bud Felkamp, President of the Glen Helen Raceway, had a meeting at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Maggiora and in common agreement they have decided to not organize the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Glen Helen in 2017.
Glen Helen Raceway and Youthstream have worked in close cooperation over the last 2 years and both entities have invested serious funds for the organization of the MXGP of USA but despite the quality of the organization, the excellent racing and the massive media coverage the fan attendance was much lower than expected and also much lower than what this event deserves.
For such a prestigious event which deserves and needs an outstanding fan participation the risk is too high, and this is the main reason why it has been decided in common agreement to not organize the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in 2017 in Glen Helen. If the situation changes in the future both parties would be keen to work together again.
