Wie is Richard van der Westhuizen?

Wie is Richard van der Westhuizen? Een vraag waar de meeste mensen misschien het antwoord op moeten schuldig blijven. Nochtans rijd Richard binnenkort wel de Motocross of Nations voor Zuid Afrika. De zoveelste nobele onbekende of toch iemand die de ganshendel meer dan goed weet staan? Wij zochten het uit.

Richard van der Westhuizen kreeg de motocross microben op 5 jarige leeftijd te pakken, al duurde het echter wel tot zijn 14^de eer dat Richard zij allereerste Zuid Afrikaanse titel op zijn naam wist te schrijven. Vanaf toen begon motocross steeds een belangrijkere rol in zijn leven te spelen, en ging hij zelfs een aantal wedstrijden in Europa betwisten. In 2002 wist hij opnieuw een titel op zijn naam te schrijven  en won hij ook het High School National 125cc championship, waarna hij in 2003 zelfs definitief de overstap naar Europa besluit te maken. Richard belande uiteindelijk in Schotland, waar hij als beste resultaat een 5^de plaats tijdens een manche om het Brits kampioenschap weet neer te zetten. Helaas voor hem brak hij kort nadien tot tweemaal toe zijn pols, waardoor hij nood gedwongen weer huiswaarts moest  keren. Voor even leek zijn crosscarrière die er tot dan toe veelbelovend uit leek te zien er op te zitten.

Tot Richard in 2005 door de grote poort weet terug te keren door op slechts 19 jarige leeftijd de Zuid Afrikaanse titel in de 450 klasse op zijn naam te schrijven. Ook in 2006 weet hij de titel te pakken, en in 2008 en 2009 weet hij zelf de titel in zowel de MX1 als MX2 klasse te veroveren. Vanaf toen wist Richard nog maar liefst 3 MX1 en 1 MX2 titel op zijn naam te schrijven, waarna hij in 2016 een punt lijkt te zetten achter zijn carrière met maar liefst 12 Zuid Afrikaanse titels achter zijn naam.

Zijn pensioen was echter wel van korte duur, aangezien Richard in 2015 begon met een nieuwe uitdaging namelijk  Enduro. Na voornamelijk een aanpassingsjaar aan het format van enduro te hebben ondergaan wist Richard zich alsnog naar een knappe 8^ste plaats algemeen in het E1 kampioenschap  te rijden.

Sinds 2016 komt Richard uit voor het Factory ABE Midas Husqvarna Team in zowel Enduro als motocross, en wist dus ook dit jaar weer een plekje te veroveren binnen team Zuid Afrika voor de MXON.
